The Great American Smoke-Out

The Great American Smoke-Out traditionally takes place on the third Thursday in November.  This year Thursday, November 19th is our national smoke-out day.

A day to "Butt Out":  The concept dates from the early '70s when Lynn Smith, publisher of the Monticello Times of Minnesota, announced the first observance and called it "D Day." The idea caught on in state after state until in 1977, it went nationwide under the sponsorship of the American Cancer Society. If past Smokeouts are any indication, as many as one-third of the nation's 46 million smokers could be taking the day off from smoking.

Yes, it is true, only 3 cigarettes a day puts you at risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. CBS News released information stemming from a new report that the reason smoking is so dangerous is because it increases blood pressure, constricts blood vessels and decreases HDL or good cholesterol. The study also found air pollution and secondhand smoke increase your risk of cardiovascular disease by 30-percent.

12 hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.  (US Surgeon General's Report, 1988, p. 202)

1 year after quitting: The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.  (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p. vi)

5 years after quitting: Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.  (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p. vi)

10 years after quitting: The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease.  (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, pp. vi, 131, 148, 152, 155, 164,166)

15 years after quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker's.  (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p. vi)

Study: Hypnosis Works to Treat Hospitalized Smokers - Health News | Current Health News | Medical News -

Last weekend my friend Ron ended up in the hospital for an emergency colonoscopy.  His doctor was very concerned because Ron has a "heart condition" and he had found traces of blood in his stool.  And yet Ron continued to smoke despite the health risks.   After the fact Ron was able to smile and say that this hospitalization was the catalyst that got him to finally quit smoking.  He admits that while in the hospital it was easy not to smoke since it was prohibited and he was feeling so poorly.  Ron was concerned that once he returned home he would return to the habit.  Upon discharge from the hospital, Ron had a smoking cessation hypnosis session with me to reinforce his SUCCESS. 

Here is what Ron said following the hypnosis session:
"I feel relaxed and smoke-free. I couldn't stand the smell of smoke in my car or house anymore.  Eugenia makes you feel very relaxed and comfortable while in her care and she conducts herself in a very professional manner.  Hypnosis really assists with managing cravings, it's like a fleeting thought.  Nothing that I can't handle."
